I became interested in alternative options in veterinary medicine while working for 12 years in small animal general practice.   Especially with chronic issues or where pain control was needed, it sometimes felt we would reach a plateau in our care or that an unintended consequence of our efforts to help was an increase in stress to our patients and their owners.

Looking for ways to add to and balance the conventional veterinary care I could provide, I completed the International Veterinary Acupuncture Society’s Basic Course in Veterinary Acupuncture in 2011 and am working on completing the requirements for certification.

I love working with people to help them decide on the best care for their pets, and I love how acupuncture allows us to choose treatments that work best with each individual.

Black Jack is an older kitty who started having difficulty jumping on to the bed at home 3 years ago. His Mom, Tonya, also noticed that he stiffened up when she lifted him and that he did not want his back touched. Based on Dr. Dawn’s evaluation it is likely that Black Jack has arthritis in his back and hips.

On his first several visits to AHCS Dr. Dawn performed spinal manipulation for Black Jack. After the very first session he was able to jump readily and became more active in the house. After several treatments he stopped stiffening up when Tonya picked him up. Black Jack has continued to have good movement and mobility with an adjustment every 2 to 3 months. Tonya can tell when he begins to be sensitive to touch, looks like he is moving stiffly or has trouble jumping. A spinal adjustment for a cat is extremely gentle and often helps them to move and feel better immediately.

When Black Jack’s back or hips are painful Dr. Dawn also provides acupuncture to help him feel more comfortable. Black Jack is very tolerant of the tiny needles placed in the acupuncture points on his back and legs.

Many cats are very comfortable with needle placement for acupuncture. Another highly effective way to stimulate the acupuncture points is with a gentle electrical stimulation that is so low the cats don’t actually feel it. They only feel the touch of a small round instrument on their skin. The electrical impulse is very effective for pain relief, and for relaxing tense muscles often associated with arthritis. Light therapy is also helpful for pain relief and to promote healing of injured tissues. All of these forms of care are well tolerated and the cats often become relaxed and sleepy during their visits!

By combining spinal manipulation, acupuncture, light therapy and electrical stimulation we are able to greatly improve the comfort and quality of life for cats. With so many options to choose from we tailor our treatment plans to the needs and tolerance of each individual. Studies have shown that 90% of cats over the age of 12 years have some joints with arthritis. Cats frequently become less active and less social at home, and family members often think the changes are due to “old age”. In fact, many of these cats are painful and with help they will become more comfortable and happier!

Prerequisites: Your dog should be able to sit, stay, lie down, and follow simple obedience commands. He/she must be compatible with others and non-aggressive. Off leash work will be a part of the course. Vaccination history and instructor approval for intact dogs are required.

Noah hurt his leg while retrieving about 4 or 5 weeks ago and has been working through a rehab program which has included strengthening exercises, massage, laser therapy, and daily doses of Joint Shield.  I am thrilled to report that Noah is no longer limping and is finally getting back to his enthusiastic and creative self.  We will continue the prescribed exercises and daily Joint Shield. Since Noah is an active dog he will also continue taking Joint Shield as part of his maintenance and wellness program.

Frankly I was highly skeptical of Joint Shield but am convinced that it has been incredibly helpful to Noah’s healing process. Deb K.
